Brakes on a hybrid — pads and discs despite regenerative braking

There is less wear, but corrosion and seizure still happen. What to check at a service.

Brakes on a hybrid — pads and discs despite regenerative braking

A hybrid often slows using the electric motor, so the pads wear more slowly than in a petrol car. That does not mean the brakes “do not exist” — rear discs in particular can rust on the motorway and in winter.

Symptoms of worn brakes

  • A metallic squeal when braking
  • Steering vibration when braking from speed
  • Longer pedal travel or a soft brake

Corrosion after winter

After a season of road salt it is worth checking the rear discs — they often look “OK” at a glance but have corrosion grooves. Under regeneration the system must hand over smoothly to the hydraulic brake.

Brake fluid

Every 2 years, replace DOT4/DOT3 fluid to specification. Old fluid lowers effectiveness and can damage the ABS passages that work with the regeneration system.
