The power and charge gauge on a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — how to read the scale

The CHG, ECO and POWER scale shows what the system is doing right now. A short charge spike is not always a fault.

The power and charge gauge on a Toyota or Lexus hybrid — how to read the scale

The gauge on a Toyota and Lexus hybrid dash splits driving into CHG, ECO and POWER. It is not a rev counter. It shows whether you are feeding energy to the battery, driving economically, or asking for a lot of power.

How to read the bar

  • CHG — braking or a descent charges the battery
  • ECO — the range where a hybrid most easily holds low fuel use
  • POWER — a heavy pedal, the petrol engine is helping

When recovery is short

The CHG bar does not rise when the pack is full, very cold, or when hard braking was taken by the discs. That does not have to be a fault. If there is no recovery at all with a healthy battery and a light pedal, we check the brakes. The mechanics of recovery are in the text on regenerative braking.

Recovery gone or the car will not slow on the motor? We will check the brakes and the battery.
