In many Toyota and Lexus hybrids you can switch on EV mode — for a short distance the car runs mainly on the electric motor, without starting the petrol engine. That is handy in heavy traffic, in underground car parks and when pulling up to the house, but it has hard limits on speed and range.
When is EV mode available?
The conditions depend on the model and the HV battery temperature. Usually you need:
- a sufficient charge in the traction battery,
- pack temperature in an acceptable range,
- speed below the limit (often about 40–50 km/h),
- no large demand for power (for example hard acceleration).
When one of the conditions is not met, the car switches EV off by itself and starts the petrol engine — that is normal behaviour, not a fault.
How to switch EV mode on?
On newer models look for the button EV Mode or an option in the multimedia menu. On older Prius cars the mode is sometimes available only at low speed and after the system has warmed up. Before a longer drive in EV it is worth having a charged battery 12V — a weak 12 V battery often blocks a proper entry into the special modes.
What shortens the range in EV?
- Air conditioning or heating — a large electrical load
- Climbs and a heavy load — the battery discharges faster
- Freezing weather — BMS limits to protect the cells
EV mode is a convenience for a few hundred metres or a few kilometres, not a substitute for an electric car.
EV and HV battery life
Short stretches in EV do not “destroy” the battery, as long as the car is not forced into frequent deep discharges. In regular use what matters more is the overall condition of the pack — it is worth a battery diagnostic at a workshop once a year.
